Memory Sharing Jiang Yansong (06/17/05 06:34:46 AM)
I want to share some of memory about Lan Yi from my experience.
The first impression Lan Yi gave me was the Department of Physics’ performance (It might be for the National Day). My then roommate Yao Nanhua was pulled from his bed by Xia Tingkang to be part of the freshman group show. When I watched the show at Ban4Gong1Lou2, I saw Lan Yi was part of the show as well. All the performers wore funny masks dancing with some joyful music. I remember seeing Lan Yi acted rather seriously on the stage, make a clear comparison with Nanhua, who seemed to have the show ended as soon as possible.
The other piece of memory of those years was the MMs of physics 8002 gave all guys from our class a dancing lesson in the activity room of the 3rd floor , Building 41-42. Lan Yi was a good teacher, very patient.
I felt closer to her during the graduate student years. There was one time I met her on campus. We chatted a bit and then talked about Zhang Jian. I believe Lan Yi had been dating with Dai at that time and both of us started to worry about Zhang Jian. We thought it’s time for her to find a boyfriend and decided to give her some advice. It was a Friday or Saturday, we sent a message to Zhang Jian by either phone or through somebody who was also a graduate student at Yu4Quan2Lu4 complex. The message was that we wanted to meet her at her home the next day and have some serious talk. We didn’t know if she had got the message or not. The next morning, Lan Yi and I rode bicycles to Zhang Jian’s home. On the way there, we talked about her relationship with Dai. She sounded very happy at that time.
Zhang Jian didn’t show up until an hour later or so. It turned out that She didn’t plan to come home that weekend as she was attending some class activity. As she couldn’t reach us, she had to come back home from YuQuanLu to meet us. We gave Zhang Jian our “advice”, but only to find out Zhang Jian had started to date.
I still remember vividly seeing Lan Yi and Dai were dancing at “Xue2 Qi1” cafeteria. They always looked happy together. At the beginning of a semester, I came across Lan Yi on campus. She told me that she went to Dai’s home during the break. After she had arrived, there were quite a few kids outside Dai’s home, try to take a sneak peek of Lan Yi through the window. Lan Yi said at the moment, she felt like in the same scene of a then popular Japanese movie (I forgot the name, but the scene was the bride went to her fiancé/husband’s country home). She looked very happy about the experience.
I met her several times in the US. The first time was at her Lehigh home. A bunch of us, including Jinglin and Chen Weiqun, visited her and Dai around New Year’s eve in 1992. I remembered that we arrived at her place from Atlantic City around 4 or 5 am. We went to ski the next day, which was the first time for many of us. Lan Yi was a very good hostess. We had a wonderful time there.
The other time was during the Christmas holiday season in 1997, Zhang Jian, Wang Xiaotian and I went to San Diego. Lan Yi and her husband drove 6+ hours from Arizona to meet us at Zhou Jiuying’s house. I was very impressed. |
